What is a target audience?

To define your target audience, you need to look at a variety of demographic factors to establish the type of people that are most likely to be interested in your product or service. These factors could include:

  • Marital status/whether they have children

  2. Conduct a review of your competitors. Do you know who your biggest business competitors are? The likelihood is that their customer base will be the same target audience as yours. Analyse any information you have about their customers to help you to define your target audience.

You may well find that you have multiple target audiences – perhaps, different audiences for different products, or different potential audiences for the same product, depending on how it is used.
